Europa selecciona a CAF para el desarrollo de un prototipo de tren de hidrógeno

La FCH JU, agencia de la Comisión Europea dedicada a impulsar el desarrollo del hidrógeno y de las pilas de combustible, ha seleccionado la propuesta FCH2RAIL para iniciar las negociaciones de un acuerdo de subvención de la UE valorado en 10 millones de euros. El proyecto FCH2RAIL será liderado técnicamente por CAF y permitirá el desarrollo de un prototipo de un tren propulsado por hidrógeno, contando con una importante financiación por parte de los fondos europeos a través del programa H2020.

Este proyecto abarcará en sus distintas fases tanto el diseño y fabricación de un prototipo de tren de hidrógeno innovador, como las pruebas necesarias para su validación y homologación. Todo ello con la finalidad de lograr un producto cero emisiones con un rendimiento operativo que sea competitivo con los actuales trenes propulsados por motores diésel, tanto en vehículos de nuevo diseño como en rehabilitaciones.

El Consorcio que está formado por las empresas CAF, DLR, RENFE, TOYOTAMOTOR EUROPE, ADIF, IP, CNH2 y FAIVELEY Stemmann Technik, ya ha iniciado el proceso de cierre del acuerdo contractual que incluye los detalles del alcance de la participación de cada uno de los socios. Está previsto que dicho proceso finalice antes de fin de año, lo que daría luz verde al inicio del proyecto en enero de 2021.

Así, el proyecto, que cuenta con la participación de empresas de cuatro países europeos (España, Bélgica, Alemania y Portugal) tendrá una duración cercana a los 4 años y contará con un presupuesto por encima de los 14 millones de euros, de los cuales aproximadamente el 70% será soportado con la ayuda de los fondos europeos.

En la actualidad y a pesar de estar en marcha el despliegue de los programas tradicionales de electrificación de líneas, dicho despliegue es limitado, principalmente debido a los elevados costes que implica, por lo que todavía tardará décadas en materializarse completamente. A día de hoy la mitad de las líneas ferroviarias de la UE no están electrificadas y son operadas con trenes diésel que generan contaminación atmosférica y acústica.

Por este motivo en los últimos años ha crecido el interés de muchas autoridades de transporte público y privado, tanto en la UE como fuera de ella, por la tecnología basada en el uso de pilas de combustible de hidrógeno en el entorno ferroviario. Este proyecto refuerza la apuesta por el desarrollo de esta innovadora tecnología, cuyo principal desafío es lograr ser una alternativa competitiva a los trenes diésel en el marco de descarbonización actual.
