BBVA Ventures invierte en Coinbase, la plataforma líder de Bitcoin

BBVA Ventures, el proyecto de capital riesgo del Grupo BBVA que invierte en startups que están transformando la industria financiera, ha realizado una inversión en Coinbase, la plataforma líder para realizar transacciones con la divisa virtual Bitcoin.

Coinbase, fundada en junio de 2012 en San Francisco, ofrece a consumidores y empresas la posibilidad de comprar, vender y realizar transacciones fácilmente con Bitcoin y provee a los desarrolladores las herramientas para crear nuevas aplicaciones sobre su plataforma tecnológica. Bitcoin es la aplicación más importante a nivel mundial de la tecnología blockchain, un registro online público que verifica las transacciones con la moneda digital.

“En esencia Bitcoin es un protocolo descentralizado que permite el intercambio de valor entre partes en cualquier lugar del mundo, algo que potencialmente podría alterar los servicios financieros”, asegura Jay Reinemann, director de BBVA Ventures. “Al servir a consumidores, empresas y desarrolladores por igual, Coinbase toca los aspectos más importantes de este ecosistema emergente, y está en una de las mejores posiciones posibles para conocer los nuevos desarrollos y aplicaciones para esta tecnología.»

A enero de 2015, Coinbase cuenta con 2,1 millones de consumidores que usan su “wallet” (cartera virtual), 38.000 negocios que procesan pagos con Bitcoins a través de su plataforma y 7.000 desarrolladores que construyen nuevos servicios basados en su interfaz de programación de aplicaciones (API). Los 75 millones de dólares de la nueva ronda de financiación Serie C eleva el capital total logrado por Coinbase hasta los 106 millones de dólares. La ronda ha sido liderada por DFJ Growth con la participación de inversores existentes que incluyen a Andreessen Horowitz, Union Square Ventures y Ribbit Capital. La misión de BBVA Ventures es encontrar y ayudar a las compañías más innovadoras en los servicios financieros.
